[Decor]: Doily Shadow love

By Shannon South. While it’s absolutely beautiful, the $850 price tag seems a bit much…couldn’t this be a fairly simple DIY project with a balloon and some paper mache (hey - I made a pinata or two in my day), or am I missing something?

UPDATE: Tutorial here. Thanks Stacey (my pinata partner in crime from childhood - how appropriate that she’d be the one to find this)!

[Photography] Back to the Future

This series by Irina Werning is so great. My brother and I are planning to do a twist on it next week and have Jacob (his son) reenact on his childhood photos. Would also love to do this with my old neighborhood friends (Deerfield Drive shoutout!)

[Fashion]: Holly Aiken

Holly Aiken hosted a “Drafts and Crafts” event this weekend  - DIY Valentine’s using scraps from her studio, with beers provided by PBR??? I can’t imagine a more fun and up my alley way to spend a Saturday! Alas, she’s not in NYC, but in my hometown of Raleigh, NC.

For those of you that aren’t familiar with her work, check it out. She’s an NCSU grad and has a super cute store downtown. Continuing to support local businesses in 2011 - check!

[Fashion]: BHLDN

image

I don’t want a typical “wedding dress,” or anything typical, really! It’s perfect for some girls, but personally I’d feel silly in a big pouffy dress that looks like a wedding cake topper - that’s just not me. So, when I saw the new bridal line from Anthropologie, BHLDN (pronounced “Beholden”), I thought it might be just the ticket - or at least, as always with Anthro, good inspiration.

If anyone one has alternative resources for dresses, send them my way - vintage, handmade, etc. Again, could be just a beautiful gown, not necessarily a “wedding dress!”

The possibilities of a first memory

I’ve become fascinated with what my nephew’s first memory might be ever since he hit the age that it normally happens, around 3. On one hand, it’s so strange to me, since our family life has pretty much revolved around the kid since he was born - how could he NOT remember all the fun we’ve had?! On the other, it’s so much fun to think about what it might be…

image

Will it be the night a few months ago when my brother took him and Natalie (my adorable niece-in-law) camping on Carolina Beach for the first time? They roasted marshmallows and woke up with the sun to start fishing in their footie PJ’s.

image

Or, could it be the day at the Polka Fest that he proudly first took a lady’s hand to dance, with Grandpa on the drums in the background?  (Sidenote: Smooth move with the tracksuit choice, Jake.)

Either way, this kid has certainly inherited a strong love for life, friends and family from his mom and pops, so I’m sure the first memory will be a sweet one.

[Photography]: Piper

Here are a few photos from a really special shoot I did while home in NC. Piper is the daughter of our dear friend Joe. A few months before he passed, Joe saw the photos I’d taken of my nephew Summer ‘09 and loved them. It’s comforting to know how much Joe would enjoy these photos of Piper.

I feel really lucky to capture her yearly and love to see both Kristy, her mama, and Joe coming through more and more. She turned 1 in September so she’s moving like crazy and full of funny tricks!

Cute notecards from I Suwannee. If I hadn’t already bought your birthday present, Danley, I’d get you the HOLLER ones!

It’s been fun following designer/decorator/entrepreneur/refurbisher/chick extraordinaire Jamie Meares past year - from getting laid off, to starting this little store and blog, now with e-comm up and running - it’s one of my new year’s resolutions to take notice and invest in small businesses like this with people following their passions.

For all my NC friends, she’s in Raleigh on Glenwood Ave! Check it.
